British citizens and membership

Updated 01.01.2024

  • Great Britain left the EU (Brexit) on 1 January 2020. Those who worked on Norwegian ships at the turn of the year 2020/2021 must still be members of MPK also after the turn of the year 2020/2021. The “cross-border situation”, i.e. work on Norwegian ships, must continue “without interruption” (Separation Agreement art. 29 no. 2).
  • For Britons who were employed on Norwegian ships after the turn of the year 2020/2021, the bilateral social security agreement between Norway and Great Britain applies.
  • With effect from 1 January 2024, a new convention on social security coordination between Great Britain, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway applies. This follows by far the EU’s social security regulation regarding the choice of law, and therefore also membership in the MPK. British citizens must then, as a general rule, be members of MPK if they work on a Norwegian ship.
